Positive/Negative Experiences with Technology from Group 1

When our group discussed our experiences with technology, we all had very different positive experiences, but pretty similar negative experiences. Gina told us how a cassette helped her enjoy reading more. When she was younger, she hated hearing herself read out loud, and got easily bored with it. Her mom brought home a cassette tape of the book she was reading, so she could listen along as she read. It was fun for her and totally changed her attitude towards reading for school.
Chelsea made a great point when she explained her negative experiences with technology. She mentioned the fact that when we depend on technology and it fails, we're left in the dark. It can be as simple as not having the internet for a while, or as risky as having your phone die when you're stranded. We're so used to having so much at our fingertips now that when something doesn't work, it's incredibly frustrating.

  1. The only way that I could think to improve this situation would be to always have backup. For instance, save files in a few different places so that if you are having difficulty pulling it up from one, there is always a backup. I have had a negative experience such as these before. I needed to get a paper done, but I couldn't access the internet to get the information that I needed. I ended up having to get up early to go into school to use the computer there to finish my paper before school. As teachers, we always must plan ahead, and have back up plans for our lesson plans and student's activities.

  2. As many of us have already learned, as a teacher you must have a back up plan. Some of us have learned the hard way but it just reinforces how important it is to be fully prepared when heading your own classroom. There are always going to be technical difficulties and in some cases your back up plan will come in handy. Many ignore the rule of a back up beacuse they do not feel that anything will go wrong but instruction should never end because there isnt an appropriate resource available.

  3. As a future teacher I think it is a great idea for all students to also listen to others read. It is important for students to be read to, even if it is on a tape player. I feel that the older elementary students have to much pressure to always read alone, when they need to also be read to. They are not to old for a story time on the carpet.
I also feel that technology can fail. The thing that really puts a negative on technology is we have been taught it is not an excuse. Teacher please such pressure on if your computer is broke or dead, go to the library. But that is not always the case. It is hard to make students have a back up plan with technology and it should not be enforced. Technology may not be available all the time.
